ULTIMATE 80s FESTIVAL – ONE DAY OUTDOOR EVENT

March 5th, 2012

Acts Confirmed: ABC, Heaven 17, Howard Jones, Katrina (Ex Katrina & The Waves) and Doctor & The Medics

Saturday 26th May, 3.30pm – 11pm

Get your leg warmers at the ready, pull out the eyeliner from the bottom of your make-up bag and resurrect the ‘flock of seagulls’ haircut for a one day festival that will take you back to the 80s. On Saturday 26th May, some of the best acts come together from one of the greatest decades when the Ultimate 80s Festival comes to The Forum Hertfordshire, Hatfield.

A one day outdoor event hosted by Heart’s Matt Jarvis, the Ultimate 80s Festival will see a line up of iconic 80s artists take to the stage and celebrate a time that saw new genres erupt, creating a defining era in UK music. New Wave is one such musical style that characterised the time and the headliner of this event is an act that were influential in the popularity and success of the genre. ABC kick-started the 80s with their own brand of pop for a ‘new decade’. On its release in May 1982 their debut album ‘The Lexicon of Love’ crashed straight into the UK album charts at Number 1. Showcasing the hit songs ‘Tears Are Not Enough’, ‘Poison Arrow’, ‘The Look Of Love’ and ‘All Of My Heart’. A groundbreaking collection of modern love songs it remains a classic to this day and voted by many as the best British album of the decade. The band continued to blossom and their music evolved, as they released subsequent albums which always had the ABC sound, but exerted originality and were influenced by other music of the time. They took the US by storm, collaborated with diverse artists (King Britt, David Arnold) and have continued to play live throughout their 30 year career with a high energy performance.

Joining ABC are fellow Sheffield synthpop stars, Heaven 17. Their debut album, ‘Penthouse and Pavement’, was a seminal record which demonstrated the band’s left-wing outlook and courage to express political views through their music. It charted at Number 14 and was certified Gold by the BPI in 1982. In 1983 Heaven 17 followed this early success with the landmark single ‘Temptation’, charting at Number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. Taken from the band’s second album, ‘The Luxury Gap’, the release spawned two further chart hits (‘Come Live With Me’, ‘Crushed By The Wheels Of The Industry’) with the album charting at Number 4 and certified Platinum. Since then, they have released six albums and remained relevant with their influence on many contemporary artists appropriating the 80s electro sound. This was witnessed most by the joining of Heaven 17 and La Roux when they recorded a session for the BBC and on stage collaborations at Glastonbury Festival and the War Child Brits After Show party in 2010.

Complementing this already stellar line up is legendary Electronic artist, Howard Jones, who burst onto the contemporary music scene in 1983 with pioneering synthesisers and high energy live shows. A classically trained pianist, Jones applied his technique to the early synths and was triggering sequencers live on stage whilst playing and singing - something that no one had done before. About to embark on a UK tour playing his first two studio albums live in their entirety, Howard will be warmed up and raring to go for the Ultimate 80s Festival in May.

Getting the party started and bringing some sunshine for all us all to walk on will be the wonderful Katrina from Katrina & The Waves and Doctor & The Medics, whose Number 1 hit ‘Spirit In The Sky’ is the perfect anthem to have everybody dancing on the Bank Holiday weekend.

Whether you experienced the decade the first time round or have just been bitten by the 80s bug, the Ultimate 80s Festival has everything to bring the essence of this incredible decade to Hertfordshire.

ANTI-FLAG announce ANTIfest, their very own UK festival taking place on May 3rd

February 22nd, 2012

"I've been a fan of the uncomprising spirit of ANTI-FLAG for a long time. This latest record captures the punk rock anger and heartfelt hope of a world in flux.”
Tom Morello from RATM

Today, Feb 22nd 2012, the brilliant ANTI-FLAG can announce their very own UK festival, ANTIfest! Taking place on May 3rd at The Forum Hertfordshire, the festival will be a first for the band, who look set to establish it as an annual event. As well as headline the festival, the band have curated the whole bill, booking bands they love, have played with before and that share a similar musical ethos and attitude. The event will also have volunteers from Amnesty International, PETA, and Emmaus providing information and a forum for debate and discussion.

The full line-up is:
ANTI-FLAG (HEADLINERS)
Bouncing Souls
The Skints
The Menzingers
The Computers
Red City Radio

Festival ticket price - £13 wristband system – age restriction 14+

The band are also soon to release their new album, ‘The General Strike’, out March 19th on Side One Dummy). The 12 tracks that comprise the bands 8th studio album are arguably their most aggressive to date. Recorded in the Pittsburgh studio that ANTI-FLAG built with money they made from dissolving their RCA deal, ‘The General Strike’ was literally forged inside a monument to the redistribution of corporate wealth, and mixed by their old friend, Justin Francis. The results are 12 tracks that find Anti Flag doing what they do best in a way that they’ve never really done it before. ‘The General Strike’ is equal parts reggae and hardcore, modern folk punk and traditional Clash influenced dance punk. It’s reckless and tight, aggressive, experimental and unabashed in its influences. In short, it’s the kind of record that could only be made by a seasoned band in their own studio, operating on their own time and working with old friends.

No strangers to throwing their name behind good causes, the Flag also lent their ferocious live set to the Gay Edge Liberation benefit in Cologne Germany and Positive Force DC. Recently, Anti Flag brought their punk philanthropy to the UK for Wherever the Need, which supports clean water projects. They’ve been extremely active and vocal in the Occupy Wall Street movement. Even for a band who’s shared stages with such massive and diverse acts as Rage Against the Machine and Bjork and headlined a festival of 50,000 Germans, it’s been a banner year of pushing forward for Anti Flag, not only in terms of touring, but also visible activism.

The Human League XXXV Tour coming to the Forum Hertfordshire - 10 Dec

February 7th, 2012

The Human League have announced a fourteen date UK tour starting at the Brighton Dome on 23rd November 2012, taking in London’s prestigious Royal Albert Hall on 26th November, and culminating at the Forum Hertfordshire on 10th  December.  The tour celebrates the band’s 35 years in the business and is titled XXXV.

Last year the band released a new record on Wall of Sound entitled ‘Credo’ produced by I Monster, their ninth studio album.  ‘Credo’ is part of that particular pop lineage that goes from Bowie, Roxy and Kraftwerk to Donna Summer, Chic and Michael Jackson to Lady Gaga, Usher and Girls Aloud. Supremely infectious chart pop music, only with the League you get an extra subversive “X” factor.

The Human League are more highly regarded now than in 1981 when they released their landmark album Dare!  They’re used to everyone from Madonna to Moby, Pet Shop Boys to Robbie Williams, citing them as an influence. Now the dubstep generation – notably, the acclaimed Darkstar, who cover the League’s 1982 B-side ‘You Remind Me Of Gold’ on their current album, North – have begun to pay homage to the original sound of Sheffield. Then there are the ‘L’ girls, the new generation of synth-driven female pop artists, who have got in on the League-adoring act: La Roux is a known admirer of the electro pioneers, while Little Boots is such a fan she requested Philip Oakeys input on her debut album. Even Lady Gaga professed to be a devotee when she met them recently; they had adjacent dressing rooms at the ‘V’ Festival.

The band gave us the greatest ever Christmas Number 1 single with 1981/2’s ‘Don’t You Want Me’, have had four Top 10 albums and eight Top 10 singles in the UK as well as two US Number 1 singles and sold 20 million records worldwide: the most lauded TV program of recent times, time-travel saga Ashes To Ashes, based one of its main characters on Joanne Catherall, while the mighty Philip Oakey appeared in a recent episode of Top Gear at the personal behest of Jeremy Clarkson who regularly name-checks the League in his newspaper column.

Reggae and dub legend Lee “Scratch” Perry at the Forum Hertfordshire

January 5th, 2012

One of the most influential people in the reggae and dub music Lee “Scratch” Perry with his Upsetters Band will be performing live at the Forum Hertfordshire on Friday 3rd February

Born Rainford Hugh Perry on March 20, 1936 in Kendal, Jamaica, Perry’s career as a producer and musician is considered to have produce some of the most influential sounds in the history of ska, reggae and dub.

He began this career in the 1950s as a record seller for Coxsone Dodd's Sound System, which was essentially a mobile booth containing speakers and a variety of American R&B records. He then became Coxsone Dodd’s assistant once Coxasone began recording his own material.

Perry eventually began his own label, Upsetter Records. His first hit single, recorded with his band The Upsetters, was called "People Funny Boy", and made two major musical innovations: first, it was a very early use of a "sample" (a clip of a sound used for effect, common in rap), and it was also the first recording of the rhythm that is now identified as reggae.

In 1973, Lee "Scratch" Perry built his own recording studio, known as the Black Ark. It was at this stage where he began to focus is attention on production he was able to work with legends such as Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Heptones, and Junior Marvin. It was during his collaborations with Bob Marley that he made some of his most notable innovations.

Now settled in Switzerland Perry is still performing at the age of 72, and is known for his wild outfits and bizarre (though highly entertaining) on-stage storytelling.

Tony Christie – 50 years in Music Tour

October 3rd, 2011

Sunday 23rd October 2011 @ The Forum Hertfordshire

A born showman and one of the all-time classic performers, Tony Christie has notched up 50 years in music and it’s easy to see why. The one of a kind singer announces four unmissable live shows this winter at O2 Academy venues in Sheffield, Bournemouth, Oxford and The Forum Hertfordshire.

With his roots in Sheffield, Christie has had Top Twenty hits worldwide with ‘Las Vegas’, ‘I Did What I Did For Maria’, ‘Avenues And Alleyways’, ‘Walk Like A Panther’, ‘Every Word She Said’ and of course the anthem, ‘(Is This the Way to) Amarillo’. In recent years Tony has enjoyed much success following the resurrection of ‘(Is This the Way to) Amarillo’ by comedy genius Peter Kay, who gave the track a new lease of life in the series Phoenix Nights. The infamous song has sold over one and a half million copies and is still the biggest selling single of the century as well as being used as the official Comic Relief single and taking the Number 1 spot.

2008 saw the release of the inimitable ‘Made In Sheffield’, featuring collaborations with some of Sheffield’s finest including Richard Hawley, Jarvis Cocker, The Human League and Arctic Monkeys. The album was a major commercial and artistic success which led to his next project, 2011’s ‘Now’s The Time!’. Christie re-visited his roots once again for this record, but this time it wasn’t in a geographical sense. The album bought together the sound of northern soul, British beat, filmic sound-tracks and a nod to Johnny Cash with some poignant ballads and saw Christie working once again with Jarvis Cocker and Moloko’s Roisin Murphy.

Following a successful tour to mark the release of ‘Now’s The Time’, Christie plays this handful of live dates, featuring tracks from his back catalogue and as always the show is beautifully conceived, and movingly delivered. Put very simply - they just don’t make them like they used to and Tony Christie live is testament to that.

Live Music – Ocean Colour Scene

August 2nd, 2011

The Forum Hertfordshire presents Ocean Colour Scene Live Saturday 26th November

The Ocean Colour Scene story should already be the stuff of legends; a rip-roaring rock’n’folk odyssey set to a backdrop of 21 years of U.K pop culture at its very best.

In this 21 year existence Ocean Colour Scene have notched up nine albums, three of which went Top 5 – 1996’s Moseley Shoals, 1997’s Marchin’ Already and 1999’s One From The Modern – and a run of nine successive Top 20 hit singles commencing with 1996’s The Riverboat Song. They supported Oasis at their massive Knebworth shows that same year, and two years later helmed the biggest arena tour of any UK band to date.

Having just completed a handful of gigs for the release of 21 the Box Set, including selling out London’s Royal Albert Hall, their achievements have truly been phenomenal.

From their days as Breton-shirt wearing disciples of The Stone Roses (debut single ‘Sway’) to million-selling Britpop superstars (‘Marchin’ Already’ bumped Oasis’ ‘What’s the Story...’ from the top spot in 1997) to long-term touring allies with Paul Weller, their story is inseparable from the greats of modern British rock.

In October last year Ocean Colour Scene played a handful of gigs to celebrate 21 years finishing off at the Royal Albert Hall which was a sell out, and so far this year they have just done The Moseley Shoals Tour playing at sold out venues across the UK where they performed the album from start to finish, including some songs that have never been played live.

03 March 2011 – Big Joe Louis (“"They played an excellent set of downhome and Chicago blues, bags of tasteful slide and harp, and steered clear of obvious blues standards. Other UK bands should take note...The ovation given to the band was well deserved." Blues & Rhythm)

21 April 2011 – Rob Tognoni ("Australian Rob Tognoni is one of the finest guitar players around today. His work is a combination of classic rock, blues & blues rock and is done with utmost passion and precision..." Bandit Blues Radio USA.)

Enter Shikari return to the Forum Hertfordshire

September 27th, 2010

To celebrate reaching the end of a hectic twelve months, Enter Shikari return to The Forum Hertfordshire for a Christmas 'hometown' (well, ten minutes from home anyway) show. This show will be Enter Shikari's last live performance until late 2011, as they retire to the studio to commence work on the follow up to the critically acclaimed, top 10 second album, 2009's 'Common Dreads'.

2010 has been an eventful year in the life of Enter Shikari ;
Four of the twelve months will have been spent in North America… first as guests of A Day To Remember for six weeks, then for a successful month-long jaunt aboard the Vans Warped Tour, and finally for the upcoming six week headline tour through October / November.

Also on the travel itinerary there's been two Australian tours, a Japanese headline tour, a plethora of European festivals and the band's first ever visit to Russia.

On the home front there's been a short UK tour that culminated in a triumphant London Hammersmith Apollo show, an appearance at The Prodigy's 'Warrior's Dance' festival, headline slots at Surrey's Redfest and Newcastle's Evolution Festival, and a retina-frazzling, eardrum-bursting slot on the Radio One / NME Stage at this year's Reading & Leeds Festival.

Add to that the release of the 'Tribalism' mini-album, a nomination for Best British Band at the Kerrang Awards, the recording of a new single (news of that very soon), the filming of a possible live DVD (news of that very soon too) and the still to come UK arena tour in December as very special guests of 30 Seconds To Mars, and its pretty safe to say that 2010 hasn't exactly been a year of kicking back or thumb-twiddling.

As with 2009's Christmas Party, doors will open at around 5pm and the event will take place across two rooms; the main stage room - which will feature live bands until 10:30pm. and the 'Front Room' (so named in honour of friends and show sponsors Front magazine) - which will be open throughout the night with guest DJs, and which will serve as the aftershow venue until 3am (details of DJs for the show / aftershow will be announced nearer the time… but you can guarantee that certain Enter Shikari members' Rout and Sgt. Rolfy alter-egos will be hitting the decks at some point).

Of course, the festive season is a time for family and friends… and, luckily for ticket holders, the Enter Shikari address book contains such names as Rolo Tomassi and Young Guns, both of whom will be very special guests at the show (an opener will be also added in due course).

Tickets will be on sale on Friday 1st October from ticketweb.co.uk

(last year's show sold out pretty sharpish. procrastination is not recommended)

April 17th, 2010

Blondie will be giving their fans the experience they’ve been waiting for with a combination of new music from their upcoming album and classic hits. Blondie are soon to release their first album in six years, “Panic of Girls’” set to be what fans have been craving. “We are really proud with the body of work on Panic of Girls. The album is a combination of numerous musical styles. We have been in the studio for a long time now so we are excited to get out on the road and debut the new songs live for our fans,” says front woman Debbie Harry. Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees (2006), music, style and pop culture icons and best selling recording artists, Blondie emerged from late '70s new wave punk scene in New York City and defied easy categorization. Noisettes set to wow Forum audiences

January 22nd, 2010

In what is sure to be our fastest sell-out yet, London punk-blues band the Noisettes will be coming to the Forum for a special gig on 20 March 2010.

The band formed in 2003 when guitarist Smith and singer Shoniwa of the band Sonarfly began playing and writing together, along with drummer Morrison. The three had previously attended the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology in Croydon together. They quickly formed a reputation for being one of the rowdiest live acts in London.

Early feedback about the band was largely positive. Entertainment Weekly placed the band on its November 2005 list of "Six Indie Brit Bands on the Cusp," and said the band "sound[s] like high-drama, heavily syncopated swagger-and-sway rock, spearheaded by incandescent frontwoman Shingai Shoniwa." In a March 2006 article on UK bands, USA Today said, "The incendiary Shingai Shoniwa leads this London blues-punk band, known for its feral and explosive live show."

They were part of the NME/Transgressive party at the Wave venue on 13 March 2008. The set included their hit songs Scratch Your Name and Sister Rosetta, with three new songs: Beat Of My Heart, IWE, and Atticus. Noisettes performed at two day music festival Camden Crawl on 18 April 2008. In January 2009 the song Don't Upset The Rhythm appeared on the advert for the Mazda 2. The song was the second single from their second album Wild Young Hearts, which was released in April 2009.
